The wings are a traditional way of referring to St. Vincent's preaching of the Day of Judgment, announcing like the angel of Revelation 14:7, "Fear the Lord, and give him honour, because the hour of his judgment is come." The crucifix is also a common feature in images of this saint. Many earlier portraits have him pointing to Heaven with his finger, often for a crowd of listeners, but here in a more intimate setting it is his eyes that are directed Heavenward.
